The Brisbane Heat have been perennial underachievers in the BBL, winning the title only once in 2012-13. Last season, they only won three of fourteen games and lost eleven.
This time around, the Heat have a lot of star power on their team. Sam Billings, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Colin Munro, and Matthew Renshaw have all joined the team. While Khawaja and Labuschagne will be absent for much of the tournament due to national duties, they should be back by the second leg. Meanwhile, Munro’s big-hitting ability and vast experience should allow him to fill the void left by Chris Lynn. Munro has scored 8917 runs in 357 T20s, including a 14-ball half-century. Another batter to keep an eye on is Sam Billings.
The Brisbane Heat’s weakness is their bowling attack, which can be pedestrian against top-tier batting sides at times. Leg-spinner Mitchell Swepson and fast bowlers Mark Steketee and Xavier Bartlett have their work cut out for them.

The Melbourne Renegades have finished last in the last two seasons, unable to string together a string of victories. The Renegades have some good bowling options but are once again lacking in batting. Aaron Finch has been out of form for some time and will need to lead from the start. Shaun Marsh and Martin Guptill are both experienced campaigners who contribute to the team’s batting stability.
The injury to Liam Livingstone is a major setback because the star English batter was in excellent form. However, West Indian all-rounder Andre Russell will take Livingstone’s place for the first four games, which should greatly benefit the Renegades. Russell, who has a T20 strike rate of 169, can provide quick cameos down the order while also bowling a few overs in the middle.
The Renegades will rely on Akeal Hosein, Mujeeb ur Rahman, and Kane Richardson to deliver on the bowling front. Kane Richardson, the team’s leading wicket-taker last season, finished with 19 scalps.
